West Coast Lumberjacks head east hoping to chop down The competition at Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta
Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta
The first two trips for California-based Humboldt State University to the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta in 2009 and 2010 ended in disappointment for Robin Meiggs’ team. Between the challenges of navigating the unfamiliar Schuylkill River and adjusting to the time change, the Lumberjacks came up short. But Coach Meiggs has high expectations this year.
With her team’s early season success in 2014, Meiggs decided this year was the perfect time to return the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, North America’s largest Intercollegiate Regatta, on Friday May 9 and Saturday May 10.
Meiggs said, “They are very excited. We have tried to use this as a training carrot! This is the right decision for our team this year and the ladies who have made the travel squad are elated. To be racing on the Schuylkill River in such a storied regatta is beyond what any of these ladies imagined when they started practice last September.”
“I really want to return to Dad Vail with more confidence than we had in our prior two experiences. We want to row with the best Division II programs in the United States, and be competitive. My inspiration for this year was watching Nova South Eastern win at Nationals last year. They appeared to be very ordinary student-athletes performing very extraordinary things. Stephen Frazier-Wong inspired and helped me set the bar higher for my team. That's what I love about this sport, at the end of the day, your rivals are your friends.”
Humboldt State will bring its Varsity Heavyweight Eight and Varsity Four boats.
Nestled at the edge of a coast redwood forest, Humboldt State, the northern-most Campus of the 23-school California State University system has commanding views overlooking Arcata, much of Humboldt Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. Its small college town location 8 miles north of Eureka and 279 miles north of San Francisco on the North Coast of California is notable for its natural beauty and relative remoteness.
Humbolt looks to build on early season success
Entering the season with a young team, Meiggs made a conscious decision to go with her smallest roster in her 20 years of coaching. Unsure of what to expect, Meiggs has been pleasantly surprised to see her team reap the benefits of their hard work.
“I really wanted a team of ladies who embraced and embodied student-athletes, said Meiggs. I wanted ladies who were willing to train as hard as they studied, and not complain about how hard their lives were by being so invested in the very sport they loved. Their success has really been backed by sheer determination and commitment to each other. I'm proud and honored.”
