PHILADELPHIA — With sunny skies shinning and strong winds blowing, the 2010 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta concluded this afternoon in front over 30,000 spectators on the Schuylkill River
Battling blustery head winds and a strong current, the crew from Brock University in Ontario captured the Richard O’Brien trophy as Dad Vail’s men’s varsity heavyweight eight champion. Brock beat second-place Delaware and third-place Florida Tech by open water with a time of 6:28.35 to become the first Canadian school to ever claim the Dad Vail title. Brock entered the Regatta as the 12th-seeded boat.
Cal-Sacramento powered its way to the women’s varsity eight championship in 7:02.52 to beat out Saint Joseph’s and Drexel for the Evelyn Bergman trophy.
Saint Joseph’s won the overall points trophy by capturing a medal in all seven grand final races that featured a boat from the Hawks. All told, Saint Joseph’s won one gold medal, two silvers and four bronze.
Today’s Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta was delayed for 1 hour, 20 minutes as race officials determined if the wind made conditions too difficult. After the short delay, the Regatta resumed and went on as scheduled.
